Nach der \u00d6ffnung des Zahnes wird bei noch vitalen Z\u00e4hnen das noch lebende Nervgewebe unter lokaler Bet\u00e4ubung entfernt (Vitalexstirpation). Bei devitalen, also toten Z\u00e4hnen, wird das tote Nervgewebe entfernt. In beiden F\u00e4llen komplett aus den Wurzelkan\u00e4len. Dazu wird eine L\u00e4ngenbestimmung der Kan\u00e4le mit eingef\u00fchrtem Wurzelkanalinstrument anhand eines R\u00f6ntgenbildes oder auf elektrischem Weg durchgef\u00fchrt.
