F\u00e4ulnis. Karies ist der Verlust von Zahnhartsubstanzen durch bakteriell-chemische Entkalkungs- und Aufl\u00f6sungsprozesse. Die Oberfl\u00e4che des Zahnes ist stetig \u00e4u\u00dferen Einfl\u00fcssen ausgesetzt. S\u00e4uren im Mundraum bewirken eine Entmineralisierung, sich einlagernde Mineralien eine Remineralisierung. Geraten diese sich abwechselnden dynamische Vorg\u00e4nge aus dem Gleichgewicht, verursacht der S\u00e4ureangriff durch L\u00f6sen chemischer Verbindungen einen Defekt und bei einem weiteren sind hoch\u00e4sthetische zahnfarbene F\u00fcllungsmaterialien mit einer Kunststoffmatrix. Unter idealen Bedingungen im Mund gelegt sind diese mehr als nur eine Alternative zu Amalgamf\u00fcllungen. Seit 1820 wurde es massenhaft als F\u00fcllungsmaterial verwendet.\n\nDer Vorteil von Amalgam als F\u00fcllungsmaterial liegt in der relativ einfachen, auch unter schwierigen Bedingungen im Mund weitgehend fehlertoleranten Verarbeitung und in seiner Haltbarkeit, die bei vergleichbar korrekter Verarbeitung auch heute noch mit keinem anderen plastischen Material erreicht werden kann. Der zeitliche Aufwand bei der Anfertigung ist bei Amalgam geringer als bei Kunststofff\u00fcllungen.
